Taylor Swift Should Stay Awesome
Every time she’s on stage, Taylor Swift gives her fans some sound advice: To stay awesome. And now I think it’s time she did the same.
Her awesomeness, as it stands right now, is at an all-time high. Not because of the double-platinum status or the Grammy nomination. Not because she’s a prolific songwriter. And not because she’s pulling a younger audience into country. But because of the way she genuinely loves her fans as much as they love her.
Plenty of country artists thank their fans from behind the microphone, then rush off to their next gig covered with a blanket of bodyguards and managers. They like their fans to buy their albums and request their singles, but they don’t actually want to meet them.
Swift? She’s the complete opposite. At the end of a concert last week, she announced to the crowd that she’d sign autographs for everyone who wanted one. Every single one. And this is a girl who doesn’t just scrawl her name mindlessly on a CD case. She’ll write a paragraph on your guitar or find a way to fit “Caroline is pretty, Love, Taylor” on your ticket stub. She hugs people, compliments their outfits, helps them with their cameras. And for more than three hours after that show, you could tell her heart was seriously in it. There were about 1,900 fans in line that night, and had there been twice as many, I have the feeling Swift would’ve stayed twice as long.
Swift’s lyrics, many pulled from the halls of high school, have been prey for many music snobs. The fans make the best critics though, responding to her simple stories with cold, hard cash (or iTunes giftcards). They have embraced this everygirl, and she knows they are the ones responsible for her unprecedented success. So it makes sense she’d appreciate those fans. But there’s a fine line between appreciating a fan from afar and thanking one in person. So far, Swift has made her home on this side of that line.
Let’s hope she stays this awesome.

Does Taylor Swift compliment people’s clothing, help them with their camera, or write personal things on ticket stubs because she “really cares about her fans” or because she knows that such actions will help her sell CDs and help her get publicity on blogs like this?
Do we have any way to know? I don’t know. I’m sure Taylor Swift is a very nice person, but some of this seems like phony-intimacy to me.
Maybe thats because I’ve never had any desire to have my favorite country stars compliment my clothes or give me a hug. I love their music but I don’t see the need for the rest of this stuff.

I have seen Taylor Swift 3 times in the past year at different venues. Everytime I see her, I am more and more impressed this beautiful young adult. At a concert over the summer in West Palm Beach, FL, she was actually overcome with emotion over the audience’s response and applause at the end of her set!

In response to hotelmotel above, I’m sure Taylor does it for both reasons; but how rare is it that she can remember people that she has met before in a meet-and-greet line at a previous concert. I have been at five of her concerts and witnessed this phenomenon on more than one occasion.
Taylor is a breath of fresh air to country music - more specifically youth which is something country music has been void of until recently.
Not only is she entertaining, but a brilliant songwriter. And let’s not forget that she’s just 18 years old. To have that kind of talent and appeal at her age, Taylor is the future of country music.
My children (ages 7 and 4) love her. They always ask me to search the radio for her songs if I don’t have her CD in the vehicle. And if I happen to have CMT or GAC on TV, they want me to find her videos. Luckily, I have her DVD so I can always show them her videos.
Keep up the good work Taylor! I look forward to watching you perform for many years to come.
P.S. Her second CD is due out later this year, and she will sell even more copies than the first. Take it to the bank!

David Bischoff - I also suspect she does it for both reasons. I would think she does care about her fans (if not, she is in the wrong business), but I’m sure she realizes that this kind of stuff brings her publicity.
Its certainly admirable if Taylor can remember the names of her fans. She’s obviously very smart. And we all feel important when someone who is basically a stranger remembers our name. No doubt this ability will help her career.
To “forhotelmotel” — I think some of this stuff is “phony intimacy;” especially hugging fans who are basically strangers. Perhaps that is because I only hug close friends and family. So it seems a bit much to me.It doesn’t seem genuine.

Hotelmotel, you’re dumb. Yes, maybe Taylor does some of the stuff she does because she knows that it will make people buy her CD. That’s part of the business. But she does so much stuff for her fans that she doesn’t HAVE to do. She stays and signs for EVERY fan who wants an autograph. She takes fans onto her bus, basically her HOME. She has meet and greets BEFORE her shows to meet with her most dedicated of fans. Clearly, most of the people she meets are ALREADY fans, and have ALREADY bought her CD and half of the merchandise she has to offer, so it’s quite obvious that she doesn’t do it to sell CDs. In fact, I sent her a birthday card for her birthday in December, and I saw a picture where Taylor had the card IN HER BEDROOM. Not only that, but a month later I talked to her before a show, and she personally thanked me for the card before I even told her that I sent it to her. A Taylor fan is a Taylor fan, not only because of her music, but because of who she is as a person. I, along with millions of other teenage girls in America, look up to Taylor. She’s honest, she’s real, and unlike most teenage celebrities, she actually has morals and stands for something. Go meet Taylor, and I bet you’ll change your mind. If not, you’re missing out on making a great friend.
