Strait sits in with Chesney for “Shiftwork”

Chesney and StraitBy their friends you shall know them: You know, I think I can count George Strait’s duet partners on the fingers of one hand. There’s Lee Ann Womack, Reba McEntire, Alan Jackson, a trio with Jackson and Jimmy Buffett, and a long-distance duet with the late Frank Sinatra. There may be others I’ve missed, but my point is that Strait is very particular about to whom he lends his name and talents. So, I was not overly surprised but was duly impressed to see that Strait duets with Kenny Chesney on the latter’s new CD, Just Who I Am: Poets and Pirates.

The song is “Shiftwork,” written by Troy Jones. It’s a good, solid, catchy, working-class salute set to a Caribbean beat. The kind of song at which these two guys excel. Maybe not Grammy time, but a nice song I’ll be happy to listen to more than once. I have to wonder, though, if the title of the song was once missing the letter “f”.

It’s a great business move for both. I don’t think most of their fans overlap and this brings them a little closer even if out of curiousity. Kenny’s management is smart in involving King George on a project to keep Kenny’s momentum going and Strait management has helped George stay in the spotlight for over 25 years with moves like this.

The song is catchy, cute, probably will appeal to middle class America. If checking for ticks can be a hit why not “shiftwork”.

Hopefully Kenny can convince George to do a video.

I’m usually not too much of a complainer when it comes to country music, but I have to say that I like the song, but I wasn’t all that impressed with the video. I like both Kenny and George, but if the song was sung by both, then why did you only hear George and not see him?

I don’t mean to offend Kenny in any way, but I would much rather look at George. Maybe because I’m older and it seems as though CMT is trying to catch the eye of the new generation. Well, good luck with that.

Yeah, it’s middle class. This song writer has lived every word of this song. It’s not only a good song, it’s a great song..Everybody give Troy a pat on the back for this one. Keep up the good work bud.

Who advised George and Kenny that this was a good song to record? Did the songwriter win a chsrity contest to have a song cut? A waste of their talent. I’ll always be a fan of George and Kenny, but very disappointed with this song.

Troy the guy who wrote the song was a friend of mine about 5 years ago. He came up to me and another friend of mine at a meeting one night and gave us a copy of his CD. One of the songs on it was “Shift work”. While driving this morning I heard this song and smile came over my face. I was just wondering if Kenny or George either one had recorded another one of Troys songs. Yep, this was not my favorite one of Troys songs off his album, Cock a doodle do was, that would have been a song for them to pick, but since they did this one. I am glad that troy sold a song. Keep up the work. Hope to hear another one of your songs off that album as well.
