Garth Brooks Edges Out Kenny Chesney at Radio

Posted: August 28th, 2007 at 5:55 pm  |  By: Chet Flippo

Garth BrooksIn a bit of a surprise, Garth Brooks is topping Kenny Chesney on the most-added radio list this week. Brooks' "More Than a Memory" edged out Chesney's "Don ‘t Blink" 76 adds to 70 as the most added new single at country radio this week, according to Country Aircheck. By comparison, the most added radio single this year has been Carrie Underwood's "So Small" with 94 adds, followed by Rascal Flatts' "Take Me There" with 86. Brooks and Chesney follow.

Another interesting aspect is that Brooks refuses to allow his single to be available as a download, because he's an "album guy." Of course, if he's an album guy, why is the radio single so important? Well, because country radio airplay pushes album sales. If the only way you can buy the single is to buy the album, the reasoning goes, then people will buy the album. Some people will, anyway. It's also quite possible that since Brooks has been "retired" from country music for so long, this current young downloading generation simply has no idea who he is and doesn't care.

If Garth were really an “album guy” he’d actually release a new one, instead of combining select cuts from his previous albums with a few new songs to entice consumers. And if he were really retired he wouldn’t still be shedding tears at press conferences or hosting dinner parties for 150 radio programmers, would he?

It’s just like an old saying, “If you can fake sincerity you’ve got it made.”

Garth is like the Michael Jackson of pop-country music. Although, Michael may have more talent, he’s less sincere than Garth. :p

Like Mr. Flippo has said many many times recently, the general population of music executives (which Garth is most definitely one, don’t kid yourselves) are holding a death grip on the soon-to-be-a-relic that is the cd. I understand that an album is a work of art and artists do not like people ripping apart what they do song by song, but the individual song is a work of art as well, and I would love the “album folks” to figure that one out. Garth became a superstar because he gave people what they wanted, now they can only get what they MIGHT want if they go to wal-mart and buy an entire album, even though thats not what most people actually WANT to do anymore.

$11-14 folks! If you were buying the songs online, you’d be paying $33 and that would be without the videos! If you do have all the old stuff already, you’re a fan and probably won’t mind $11-14 for this collection. If you don’t have the older “hits”, you’re getting a great deal!

Kelly, Garth is selling his record in all record stores this time. The Wal-Mart thing is officially over.

Robert, He could sell his record digitally for 11-14 as “Album Only” if he wanted to. I predict that’ll eventually happen.

I can’t afford to buy that set since it has songs i already have. so I’ll have to wait to hear the new ones on my radio. I’m sure garth will make it worth the wait like he always has.

I love the song personally. I had convinced myself years ago that I was no longer a Garth Brooks fan, thanks most in part to Chris Gaines. That one I still believe was a mid life crisis. Aside from that, I believe this song with make his “comeback” even sweeter. The only thing that really bothers me id this: Lee Brice wrote the song, and no doubt will make big bank off it because Garth sings it. Lee Brice sings it better, in my opinion, but it was a smart business move to let Garth record it. Well, Lee had HIS version of the song on HIS myspace page, and “Garth’s People” asked(demanded) that he remove it until all the fuss over the song dies down. Give me a break. The man wrote the song, he should be able to post himself singing it. Then again, I’m not in the industry, so what do I know…

I was so excited to hear about Garth’s new album set coming out. I absolutely love everything hes done ( aside from the chris gains thing) the man has changed the face of country music and no matter what he does will always be appreciated for everything that he has brought fourth.

Garth is a legend in country music…why else are we here talking about him…he must be doing something right! As for all you that have criticized him as being a “has been”…..think again! Garth will remain a legend until he dies and in the eyes of all the country fans (and not so country fans) he is loved and embraced by all. Keep up the excellent recording and performing you do…you are the reason country music is embraced around the world…you opened up the eyes of New York City and because of your free concert, you reached out to people that now listen to country music that before your concert would never dream of it! Garth is the real deal…stick around awhile….if you do, you will see he will be the one standing above all the other country musicians!

Garth’s -more than a memory- is good, but it’s no Kenny Chesney song. The radio is playing it so much. It’s kinda like an overload. Kenny’s Chesney still tops with me.
