My Favorite New CD

Posted: July 7th, 2007 at 1:37 pm  |  By: Sunny Sweeney

Jason Boland and the StragglersMy new favorite CD is called The Bourbon Legend by Jason Boland and the Stragglers. Jason’s an Okie but now calls Texas home. He plays all over the place and his band is awesome. They have a young steel guitar player, Roger Ray, (we have the other one-HA!) and I love playing with them. I’m really looking forward to Sept. 8 at Cain’s Ballroom in Tulsa, OK. Anyway, Jason and I have started a song and I have a really good feeling with him as a co-writer. It’s probably just gonna be one of those “let’s hang out and see if we come up with something cool” songs, which are my favorite kind. The less forced a song is when writing it, the more truthful it is, which most of the time makes it a better song. That’s how it is when I write with my best friend Brennen Leigh. We can throw back a few and just be hanging out and one of us says something and the other one goes, “Hey, get the guitar.”

There’s an online radio station that is based out of Nederland, TX (by Beaumont) that is run by Cara and Daniel Miller and it has just recently become a Texas Music Chart reporter. YAY CARA AND DANIEL!! It’s Radio Free Texas. When I began beating down doors two years ago, I went to them because I knew that they supported the musicians. They were one of the first stations to start playing my CD, Heartbreaker’s Hall of Fame. As they say, “RFT has continued to maintain that we give the artists a voice and the listeners a choice. RFT’s playlist is almost all-request driven. The fans pick what they want to hear and we oblige them.” RFT just started out by playing music that they loved and it has turned into so much more!

My girlfriend says I woke her up in the middle of the night on Saturday because I was singing “I can’t tell if I drink because she b*tches / or if she b*tches because I drink.” So you know it’s good music if you sing it in your sleep. It’ll be interesting to see what you and Jason come up with.

You are writing a song with Jason? That is going to be great. I love you both. I was really disappointed when the show on Sept 8th at The Cain’s was re-scheduled for November. I had been looking forward to the Sept show since ummm I don’t know like the end of May, but it’s ok, I can wait until November, and I know the wait will be worth it. Of course Jason plays around here all the time since he is from around these parts. Maybe RFT can team up with the Cain’s somehow and get more of the Texas/Red Dirt artists to play up here.

Great to hear you giving props to RFT! Also great to hear you are teaming up w/ Boland. Y’all keep up all the good work. Y’all are the ones we’ll still be talking about in 20 years…like people talk about the ‘Outlaws’ of the late 70’s and early 80’s. It’s awesome to have heartfelt music still flowing. With the help of the great gang at http://www.radiofreetexas.org (I’m a street team member) you guys are all going to continue getting a bigger audience. We know that guys like you will never forget the little people that helped make things happen.
